The Origin of the Intimidator

is a Fox Sports film made for NASCAR's 75th anniversary season, starring Dale Earnhardt Jr. as he passes down the story of his father, the legendary Dale Earnhardt Sr., to a new generation of his JR Motorsports Xfinity drivers: Justin Allgaier, Josh Berry, and Sam Mayer. We shot it on Dale Jr.'s own property, inside the hand-built saloon of his private Western town, Whisky River, a space so richly detailed it plays like a standing movie set. The film premiered during the Fox broadcast of the 2023 Talladega race.

That setting set the visual language. We leaned fully into the feel of a classic Western, with warm, low light raking through the saloon windows and pooling around the men gathered to listen. To get there, I placed 10K tungsten Teners outside the building and punched them through the glass, playing that golden warmth against cooler shadows to give the room depth and a fireside, cinematic intimacy. As Dale Jr. spoke, the story opened into an animated recreation of the real moment that forged his father's legend.

It was a one-day shoot with only a four-hour window with Dale Jr., which meant moving fast and missing nothing. I ran two Sony Venice cameras on Cooke S4 primes to maximize coverage and keep the energy alive without ever asking him to repeat himself. As a lifelong Dale Jr. fan, getting to build this alongside my favorite driver made it a genuine dream project, and the result carries the weight it set out to honor: a polished, character-driven Western built around one of the most beloved figures in the sport.
